About me
“I don't wait for inspiration. I'm not, in fact, quite sure
what inspiration is, but I'm sure that if it is going to turn up, my having
started work is the precondition of its arrival.” - Quentin Blake
My name is Jennifer and I am a largely self taught botanical artist. Like many of you, I was 'art-shamed' at school and I did not pick up a brush again until I was 35. But I have not stopped since.
I am immensely interested in colour and the natural world. When I sit down to paint, the workaday world fades away, leaving a wonderful feeling of flow - even if things don't always go to plan. And with watercolour there is always that element of chance and randomness which means work is always fresh and new.
Botanical painting means taking the opportunity to work intensely on observation of one plant. It helps connect me with the changing seasons and with the infinite variety of our very special native fauna and our favourite garden plants, many of which are visitors from overseas. All link back to our heritage and culture and make me feel more connected to the place I live.
